Very true. The more I thought about it the less I liked the idea. Seems like accuracy would decrease with height. Seems like it would also increase the chances of backlash and amplify any mis-calibration.

In the end, I decided to go with a core-xy inspired design using a bunch of parts from Openbuilds. I appreciate your response and if you have any more advice, I love talking about 3d printing.

If you are moving bed and not the head – you will need way more space for printer itself (up to 6 times) to reach all corners. Also it limits build height as struckture you build might be unstable to movement.

I’m actually surprised there aren’t more designs like this. Is there some fundamental disadvantage to this configuration that makes the big(ger) 3d printer companies (ultimaker, makerbot, etc) avoid it? Is there more backlash? Less accuracy? What’s the disadvantage?

If someone could proofread the text before submitting, it would be awesome.
